Design for Devices
| New Device needs new design “In terms of a tool for designers to use, the iPad is clearly for consumption so doesn’t have much place in the creative process. However I can see it becoming a popular way for designers to demo their work to clients over coffee or in a pitch. I know that’s how I’m planning to use it. The interesting thing for me is the way the iPad closes the gap between the mobile and traditional web. Until recently, the majority of web designers hadn’t really explored the possibilities of the mobile web. The iPhone helped break down the traditional barriers associated with mobile web development and created a generation of iPhone developers. However the web was still a constrained and fiddly experience. The iPad has the potential to change all that. Andy Budd, UX Director, Clearleft www.clearleft.com |

Can't beat the physical world
Social media can be used to maintain communication but it does not create as strong a link than when people also meet in person

MURDER IN ONE SHOT!
Here's another single-shot short film, this time made by students in bath (not 'in a bath'). It's a complete narrative in three minutes and clear and simple in design and execution. They enjoy telling this story, the flow of it is matched by the flow of the camera...
We will have a look at these short films when I begin the one shot project with you all!

One Shot Wonders
Chris Cooke here, director, writer and now taking you through a world of one shot filmmaking. A one shot film has to start somewhere, so here are a few examples well worth looking at... some are pretty big budget, highly ambitious shorts made with vast resources, others very simple... but all worth considering: what are the choices they make narratively and visually?
First up - big budget, fancy, reverse stuff:

And now something quite artful - this is only a small section of a slightly longer piece, but it is low budget and from a filmmaker based here in this region:

And now something funded again:

Each film uses movement to tell it's single-shot story: you will be even more restricted, working with a fixed camera, but you will be much more imaginative because of this!

Pans Labyrinth
Lighting techniques give this film a majical feel, "the stuff of legends" and reminds us of the ancient nature of the story.
